We’ll admit that some days test us, Clementines. Obligations seem to push us to our limits and obstacles appear around every bend. Bottom line: It’s a tough world out there and sometimes we take on the weight of it all.
When we’re feeling overwhelmed and unequipped to deal, we’ve started reminding ourselves to get back to basics. You know those phrases your mother used to utter in response to, well… just about everything? Turns out, she was right.
We know, we know—just bear with us! Our mothers were simply sharing words of wisdom we could use at a later date (read: now) and, believe it or not, some familiar platitudes have been helping to improve even our toughest days.
When you’re feeling as though things just aren’t going your way, try remembering these 5 simple phrases:
Whatever will be, will be. This is a good reminder that we’re not in complete control of a situation or the resulting outcome. It can be mighty freeing to realize something is out of our hands. Don’t you agree?
What’s the worst that could happen? Cheers to all fellow worriers out there. This one is for us. If we really answer this question truthfully every time worry takes over, we’ll start to realize that, oftentimes, the worst isn’t all that bad after all.
Trust your gut. If you’ve hit a snag in your day that revolves around making a tough decision, follow mom’s advice and trust your gut. Not only does she know you better than you do, but there’s also a really good chance that you might know yourself better than you think.
Fake it, ’till you make it. Here’s a little secret: we’re all faking it at least a little. The truth is, none of us know everything about everything and sometimes we have to roll with whatever life sends our way.
Tomorrow is another day. We’re going to say it: Sometimes you need to be in a funk and stay in a funk for a while. When things get really tough, it can be helpful to take the time to sit with whatever is making you blue—really feel it—and then move on. Thankfully, tomorrow is another day filled with new opportunity.
So you see, in the context of our lives now, mom’s advice wasn’t so off-base after all. Luckily ‘forgive and forget’ is another bit of wisdom she imparted—you know, for all that eye-rolling in the teenage years.
